Romance scams have become increasingly common in recent years, and they can be devastating for the victim. As a private investigator, I’m frequently called in to help individuals who have fallen victim to these scams, or to investigate if a person’s partner is being dishonest. Here’s what you need to know about catfishing and how to protect yourself.
Catfishing occurs when someone creates a fake online identity to lure people into a romantic relationship. The scammer may appear to be someone incredibly attractive, loving, and sincere, but in reality, they are manipulating their victim for money or other benefits. It’s all about emotional manipulation.
The first warning sign is usually the speed at which the relationship progresses. If someone online expresses deep affection for you almost immediately, be cautious. Scammers often move quickly to establish an emotional connection, hoping that you’ll let your guard down.
Another red flag is when the person refuses to meet in real life or always has an excuse for why they can’t video chat. They may also avoid sharing personal details, like their full name or location. Scammers often claim to be in the military or working overseas, as this provides a convenient excuse for not meeting face-to-face.
If you suspect that you’re being catfished, the first step is to investigate. You can reverse-search photos or use social media to verify their identity. If you’re unsure how to do this, a private investigator can help by conducting a background check and using facial recognition software to see if the person exists elsewhere on the web.
Once a catfish has established a connection, they will start asking for money. They might claim to be in financial trouble or need help with an emergency. This is often the point where victims realize they’ve been scammed, but by then, the damage has already been done. If someone you’ve never met in person asks for money, that’s a huge red flag.
Be careful and skeptical, especially when someone’s story seems too good to be true. If you think you’re the victim of a catfishing scam, take action quickly. It’s better to protect yourself early than to face the emotional and financial fallout later.
